Few-mode multi-core fibre with highest core multiplicity factor

Abstract: The highest relative core multiplicity factor of more than 22 is achieved by arranging a 6-mode 12-core fibre in 227-µm cladding. A quadratic double ring core arrangement realizes sufficiently low crosstalk and enables us to use advanced multi-level modulation.

“…Two of them are the 2-LP mode (LP 01 and LP 11 modes) and single-core (SC) FMFs with a step index (SI) profile and a grated index (GI) profile in which the core exists only in the center. The remaining one is a 4-LP mode (LP 01 , LP 11 , LP 21 , and LP 02 modes) and 12-core FMF [15]. The FM-MCF has a low-refractiveindex trench in the region surrounding the core inside the cladding, and the core itself has a GI profile.…”

“…Two of them were 2-LP-mode (LP 01 and LP 11 modes) single-core (SC) FMFs with a step-index (SI) profile and a graded-index (GI) profile in which the core only exists at the center. The remaining two were 4-LP-mode (LP 01 , LP 11 , LP 21 , and LP 02 modes) 12-core [50] and 19-core [51] FMFs. Both MCFs have a low-refractive-index trench in the region surrounding the core inside the cladding, and the core itself has a GI profile.…”

“…Recently proposed SM-MCFs with SCC of 30 and more [14], [15] and FM-MCF with SCC of 72 [17] showed XT of about -30 dB/ 100 km. These fibers will contribute to transmission with large capacity or high-order modulation.…”

“…The reduction of |DMD| enables the lengthening of the transmission distance from 40.4 [7] to 527 km [8]. The FM-MCF with SCC of 72, which involves 12 cores with six modes (four LP modes), successfully controlled |DMD| under less than 430 ps/km for all cores owing to a graded index profile [17]. We need to select the combination of CC and MC with the tradeoff relationship between SCC and DMD in mind.…”
