Fetal Pig Development in Sows Fed Diets Containing Different Fats

Abstract: Fetuses (57, 85, 110 d gestation) from sows fed experimental diets from day 57 of gestation were examined. Sows ate either a diet with no added fat (2.6% total lipid), or a diet containing added soybean oil (4.7%) or tallow (5.0%). The diet of the sow was shown to have no effect on fetal organ (heart, liver, lung, kidney) size or total fat content. Fetal carcass proximate analysis was likewise unaffected by changes in the maternal diet. Key words: Pig, fetus, diet, development

“…This is partly in accordance with Farnworth and Kramer (1988), who fed sows diets supplemented with soybean oil (rich in PUFA) or tallow with a cornbased diet as a control, and found no difference between diets in relative weights of heart, liver or lungs in the offspring. These data, however, were from 110 days old fetuses i.e.…”

“…In another study, the feeding of lard or maize oil either with or without 100 mg a-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet to sows throughout gestation and lactation had no effect on reproductive performance (Malm et al 1976). Similarly, Farnworth & Kramer (1988) observed that the fetuses from sows fed on diets containing no added fat, 50 g soyabean oil/kg or 50 g tallow/kg had no differences in the size or total lipid contents of heart, liver, lung or kidney nor in overall carcass proximate composition.…”

“…Based on their results, Kasser et al (1981) (Farnworth and Kramer, 1988) (Anderson et al, 1972) and the fact that at the start of the experiment, the sows had approximately 20 mm of back fat.…”
