Fetal Hilar Cells and Leydig Cells in Early Pregnancy

Abstract: 17 pairs of fetal ovaries and 26 pairs of fetal testes from 10 to 20 weeks of gestation have been examined for the presence of hilar cells or Leydig cells. Maternal plasma human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) levels were also determined in these cases. It was found that high HCG levels appeared to have little effect on the formation of ovarian hilar cells which were present in small numbers in a proportion of cases from the 13th week onwards. In contrast to these findings, the testicular Leydig cells were noted… Show more

“…We noticed them oc casionally in small numbers between the 15th and 20th week of gestation [Zondek and Zondek, 1976]. They have also been de scribed by other workers, particularly in later stages of development [Jaffe, 1931;Neu mann and Peter, 1931/32;Sauramo, 1954;Dhom, 1954/55, Slawik, 1958.…”

“…We have reported elsewhere that the fetal ovary responds in a much less marked man ner than the fetal testis to stimulation by HCG from 10 to 20 weeks of gestation [Zon dek and Zondek, 1976]. This histological in vestigation which included determination of maternal plasma HCG levels, showed that high HCG levels appeared to have little effect on the formation of ovarian hilar cells which were present in small numbers in a propor tion of cases from the 13th week onwards.…”
