Fetal heart extract facilitates the differentiation of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells into heart muscle precursor cells

Abstract: Human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCB-MSCs) are a promising stem cell source with the potential to modulate the immune system as well as the capacity to differentiate into osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes. In previous publications, UCB-MSCs have been successfully differentiated into cardiomyocytes. This study aimed to improve the efficacy of differentiation of UCB-MSCs into cardiomyocytes by combining 5-azacytidine (Aza) with mouse fetal heart extract (HE) in the induction med… Show more

“…Generation of cell lines from homozygous HLA-typed iPSCs obtained from CBMC-iPSC banks is a novel and efficient strategy for cell-based therapy [ 9 11 ]. CBMC-iPSCs have been differentiated into cardiomyocytes, hepatocytes, and chondrocytes [ 12 17 ]. However, the differentiation of CBMC-iPSCs into skin cells has not been reported to our knowledge.…”

“…In this study, we used CBMC-derived human iPSCs (CBMC-hiPSCs) for further experiments. Recently, CBMC-hiPSCs were successfully differentiated into cardiomyocytes and hepatocytes [ 17 , 36 , 37 ]. Previous work done by Guzzo et al, has shown the potential of CBMC-hiPSCs in chondrogenesis using micromass culture [ 38 ].…”

“…[32][33][34] In addition, some investigators used a cardiomyocyte extract for induction. 33,35,36 These experimental approaches showed that MSCs have the potential for cardiac differentiation. Nonetheless, the involvement of nonhuman cells or tissue extracts might delay their progression toward clinical applications.…”
