Fetal exposure to bisphenol A affects the primordial follicle formation by inhibiting the meiotic progression of oocytes

Abstract: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogenic environmental toxin widely used for the production of plastics. Frequent human exposure to this chemical has been proposed to be a potential public health risk. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of BPA on germ cell cyst breakdown and primordial follicle formation. Pregnant mice were treated with BPA at doses of 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08 mg/kg body weight/day from 12.5 day postcoitum. BPA was delivered orally to pregnant female mice. A dose-response relationship … Show more

“…BPA, which can be found ubiquitously in plastics, the lining of canned goods and boxed wine, and on printed receipts (Rubin, 2011), is one of the most common environmental factors linked to reproductive disruption (Hunt et al, 2003(Hunt et al, , 2012Peretz et al, 2014;Susiarjo et al, 2007;Zhang et al, 2012). Although BPA has been removed from a number of plastic products, particularly infant health products, its use is still widespread (Rochester, 2013).…”

“…that steroid hormones such as estrogen and progesterone trigger MOF formation (Iguchi et al 1990, Kezele & Skinner 2003, Lei et al 2010, Zhang et al 2012, Dutta et al 2014), Morohaku and coworkers used an estrogen inhibitor, ICI182780, in their organ culture system. This dramatically prevented MOF formation and improved the yields of secondary follicles.…”

“…30 Exposure to environmental factors in pregnant mice affects the expression of meiosis genes and meiotic progression. 31,32 The placenta is an important organ for material exchange between fetal and maternal blood and is the main source of nutrients for the fetus. 33 Imprinted genes play important roles in placental differentiation, growth, and function, with profound effects on fetal development.…”
