Fetal arterial and venous Doppler pulsatility index and time averaged velocity ranges

Abstract: We present the values of the commonly measured Doppler indices in fetuses with normal growth at the time of scan. The ranges, therefore, have potential utility in the setting where referrals to a fetal assessment unit are made.

“…DV pulsatility index (PI) for veins was calculated as (S À A)/TAMX ( Figure 2). Because normal values are known to vary over the course of gestation, gestational age-based Z scores of PI of the DV, MCA, and UA were calculated using published normal values, [18][19][20] and MCA peak systolic velocity was assessed by calculating multiple of the median for gestational age. 21 Cerebroplacental resistance ratio (CPR) was calculated as MCA PI/ UA PI.…”

“…Recruitment of patients started in February 2006 and was completed in December 2007. Participants fulfilled the following inclusion criteria: singleton pregnancy with term delivery, age 18-40 y, nonsmoking, a body mass index (in kg/m 2 ) at the beginning of pregnancy ,30, and a fetal Doppler scan within the normal reference range on the day before the cesarean delivery (17). All subjects habitually consumed an omnivorous diet, and none reported any health problems or pregnancy complications.…”

“…A cross-sectional study was conducted to include pregnancies with increased placental vascular impedance to flow (umbilical artery PI > 95 th percentile 59 ) by searching our database of women enrolled into research protocols that included examination of the fetal heart by three- and four-dimensional ultrasound. Women were eligible for inclusion if gestational age was determined by either a first or second trimester sonographic examination and there was a singleton fetus (> 19 weeks of gestation).…”
