Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in pediatrics. FASD and the pediatrician

Abstract: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a complex and malformative condition due to the teratogenic effect of alcohol consumed during pregnancy. Several epidemiological studies have shown that maternal alcohol use during pregnancy is the most common preventable cause of mental retardation in childhood. The effects of alcohol on the fetus range from abortion to a spectrum of clinical manifestations called Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) that includes partial FAS (PFAS), neonatal Alcohol Related Birth Defects (A… Show more

“…Acetaldehyde is a compound highly unstable and quickly forms free radicals that are highly toxic if not extinguished by antioxidants [13,14]. In the fetus, these free radicals can damage embryonic neural crest cells and can lead to severe birth defects, mental retardation and physical abnormalities in the newborns (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, FASD) [15,16].…”

“…Some measures (TCD, OFD, CCD, and FTD) were selected as markers of brain development known to be related to FASD‐induced changes . An additional measure was selected for its potential correlation with known facial features of FASD, the orbital diameter .…”

“…FAS is the main cause of mental retardation in the world but is also the foremost preventable cause of neurobehavioral and developmental abnormalities [ 212 ]. FAS can be suspected in neonatal age by the presence of microcephaly and typical facial dysmorphism [ 213 , 214 ]; during childhood, beyond the signs already described, psychomotor retardation, behavioral disorders, attention and concentration problems can be detected [ 214 ]; during adolescence, in addition to the previous signs behavioral, scholastic and social problems can be added [ 214 ]. Even though FASD is a frequent cause of disability, the exact incidence and prevalence of FASD in the world are not clear.…”

“…Even though FASD is a frequent cause of disability, the exact incidence and prevalence of FASD in the world are not clear. This underestimation of the problem leads to an incorrect diagnosis and doesn’t help the possible rehabilitation of many children with mental retardation [ 214 ]. Paternal alcohol consumption may also induce changes in the newborns, as shown in humans and in animal models [ 215 , 216 ].…”
