Ferulic, Sinapic, 3,4-Dimethoxycinnamic Acid and Indomethacin Derivatives with Antioxidant, Anti-Inflammatory and Hypolipidemic Functionality

Abstract: A series of thiomorpholine and cinnamyl alcohol derivatives, conjugated with cinnamic acid-containing moieties, such as ferulic acid, sinapic acid and 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid, were synthesized and tested for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hypolipidemic properties. An indomethacin ester with 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-(hydroxymethyl)phenol was also prepared for reasons of comparison. The majority of the compounds demonstrated considerable antioxidant capacity and radical scavenging activity, reaching up t… Show more

“…In a previous study, 3-O-malonyl-5-O-€-caffeoylquinic acid was isolated from Solanum incanum and found to increase antioxidant capacity through an increase in the DPPH value [ 44 ]. Dimethoxycinnamic acid alleviates lipid peroxidation, inflammation, and hyperlipidaemia, i.e., it also contributes to the therapeutic effects of G. livingstonei [ 45 ]. Gallic acid, too, has previously been found to exhibit antioxidant potential.…”

“…Control groups were treated with saline only instead of suspension of the compound. After 24 h, blood was taken from the aorta under hexobarbital anesthesia and used for the determination of plasma total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) concentrations, using commercial kits, against standard solutions [ 38 ]. Rats were kept on Purina laboratory chow and tap water ad libitum throughout the experiment until hexobarbital anesthesia took place.…”

“…Even though free radicals can operate as redox-signaling messengers, oxidative stress can also orchestrate the complex pathophysiological mechanisms in many diseases [ 1 ]. An imbalance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant molecules affects the redox circuitry and cell integrity through a toxic onslaught on non-target tissues [ 2 ]. A stochastic accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their precursors stimulates the expression of redox-sensitive pro-inflammatory cytokines and caspases [ 3 ].…”
