В рамках исследования рассматривается обмен как финансовыми (денежные средства или их близкие эквиваленты), так и инструментальными (помощь в уходе или по хозяйству) трансфертами пожилых респондентов с другими членами расширенной семьи, проживающими или не проживающими с ними, а также особенности ухода пожилых респондентов за внуками. Авторы опираются на базу данных международного исследования SHARE, проведенного в России в 2021 г. и регулярно проводимого в Эстонии (анализируется волна 2015 г.), и с использованием бинарной логистической регрессии анализируют факторы получения и передачи трансфертов респондентами 50 лет и старше. Отталкиваясь от ранее проведенных в других странах исследований и учитывая ограничения данных, авторы работы предполагали увидеть этнические различия в обменах финансовыми ресурсами в большей степени, чем инструментальной поддержкой; в получении денежных трансфертов — больше, чем в их передаче. Результаты проведенного исследования отчасти подтвердили сформулированные в статье гипотезы, выявив слабое и неустойчивое влияние этнической принадлежности на включенность людей старшего возраста в межсемейные обмены. Только при контроле прочих факторов (включая образование и особенно доход), принадлежность к этнической группе, отличной от доминирующей в стране, повышает вероятность участия в обмене (как передаче, так и получении) финансовыми трансфертами, но за, редким исключением, не оказывает значимого влияния на вероятность участия в обмене инструментальными трансфертами и совсем не дифференцирует уход за внуками. “…From an evolutionary perspective, the grandmother hypothesis proposes that by providing guidance, practical help and childcare, post-reproductive women aided the survival and reproduction of their children (Hawkes et al, 1997(Hawkes et al, , 1998. Similarly, from sociological and macro-economic perspectives, even in high income contexts, grandparental childcare reduces both the financial and time costs of parental care that enables subsequent fertility and labour force participation for woman (Coall & Hertwig, 2010;Hank & Buber, 2009;Hank & Kreyenfeld, 2003;Kanji, 2017;Pronzato, 2017;Sear & Coall, 2011). Bringing these perspectives together, in a cross-cultural study of more than two million married women, Huber, Zahourek, and Fieder (2017) found that co-residence with a mother's mother or mother in-law was associated with earlier reproductive debut but ultimately reduced fertility.…”

Why do grandparents invest so heavily in their grandchildren and what impact does this investment have on families? A multitude of factors influence the roles grandparents play in their families. Here, we present an interdisciplinary perspective of grandparenting incorporating theory and research from evolutionary biology, sociology and economics. Discriminative grandparental solicitude, biological relatedness and the impact of resource availability are three phenomena used to illustrate how these perspectives, within such a multi-level approach, add value by complementing not competing with each other. Changing demographics mean there is greater demand and opportunity for actively engaged grandparents to help their families, especially in times of need. Grandparents have been filling this emerging niche because in some societies the role of community and government never has, or increasingly cannot, meet the diverse needs of families. Built on an empirical foundation of descriptive and correlational research, grandparent research has rapidly entered a phase where the potential causal relationships between grandparents' roles and family health, well-being and structure can be scrutinised. Together, these investigations are producing high-quality evidence that ultimately can support informed public policy and service delivery decisions. We finish by detailing two examples of such research efforts that highlight opportunities for future research.

Objective This study used factorial survey data from five countries to assess the factors that shape young adults' attitudes toward the ideal number of children for described couples. Background Continuously low fertility rates in many Asian and European countries generate an interest in understanding the fertility attitudes of young adults—and the implications for family policies. Method The causal impact of socioeconomic and cultural factors on the ideal number of children for couples described in the vignettes was tested using a factorial survey experiment (vignette analysis). Data were collected from Germany, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to represent five different contexts each with different economies, political regimes, cultural and religious backgrounds, and population structures. Seven vignette‐level and four respondent‐level factors were assumed to affect the conditional ideal number of children. Results The strongest predictors of the higher ideal number of children for couples described in the vignettes were income, availability of childcare, and husband's full employment. The highest average ideal number of children for described couples was observed in the UAE (2.8 children), followed by Germany (1.6 children), Ukraine and Russia (1.3 children), and Japan (1.2 children). Conclusion The existing gap between public attitudes and fertility behaviors could be addressed by child‐friendly policies which allow a better reconciliation of work and family life.
