Fertility Awareness Methods: Distinctive Modern Contraceptives

Abstract: Fertility awareness methods—the Lactational Amenorrhea Method, the Standard Days Method, and the Two Day Method—are safe and effective, and they have important additional benefits that appeal to women and men. Including these modern contraceptives in the method mix expands contraceptive choice and helps women and men meet their reproductive intentions.

“…We appreciate the “Taking Exception” article by Austad and colleagues 1 and their critical review of the important issue of contraceptive classification first introduced in our March 2016 Global Health: Science and Practice (GHSP) article, “Fertility Awareness Methods: Distinctive Modern Contraceptives.” 2 We support the authors’ assertion that contraceptive effectiveness is a crucial concern for family planning program managers and potential contraceptive users. We also agree that, as with all other contraceptives, fertility awareness methods (FAMs) have limitations that make them less appropriate for some women.…”

“…Although SDM has been established as a modern method (Malarcher et al, 2016;IRH 2012), it suffers from lack of respect among family planning programmers and providers who think of it as a traditional method that is not effective, and who malign it as a "religious" method. Data from pilot sites in Benin, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, India, and the Philippines indicate that providers have initial biases against fertility awareness methods, but their attitudes toward SDM improved following training and several months of service delivery (Gribble et al 2008).…”

“…The FABMs are not only safe, based on a thorough understanding of reproductive biology but have also undergone rigorous effectiveness studies, hence fulfilled conditions as modern methods for avoiding pregnancy. 8 Additionally, they are comparatively inexpensive, not under the influence of any religious beliefs, can be practiced secretly by partners 9 and involve no medical appliance or medicine. 5 Since it is generally known that the older natural fertility regulation methods such as basal body temperature alone and calendar rhythm have low effectiveness, many women do not know of the availability of modern highly effective FABMs.…”
