Fertility and pregnancy in inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: Overall, at conception women with active disease were as likely to have a normal full-term pregnancy as those in remission. However, spontaneous abortion occurred in five (36%) pregnancies of women who had undergone previous surgery for Crohn's disease and had evidence of recurrent disease. Three of these pregnancies were associated with active disease.

“…Fertility (defined as achieving pregnancy within 1 year of regular intercourse without contraception) is reduced in active IBD [8,9]. Reasons for this are likely multifactorial and may be related to fever, pain, diarrhea and malnutrition frequently seen in IBD flares, as well as dyspareunia, decreased libido and depression [10][11][12].…”

“…Women with inactive CD or UC appear to have normal fertility when compared with the general population; infertility rates in women with inactive CD are similar to those of the general population (8-10%). 8,9 Women with CD may have slightly decreased fertility, especially when having active disease. 10,11 This may partly be explained by the formation of adhesions resulting in tubal infertility.…”
