“…Moreover, Pollen and Funckes showed a recovery of the spermatogenetic function after the repair of a dislocation by a semen analysis in a man with an absence of active spermatogenesis (7). In contrast, the histologic changes of the testes deteriorate with age in the cryptorchid testes (11)(12)(13)(14). Raman and Schlegel showed age at orchiopexy to be an independent predictor of successful sperm retrieval for men with persistent azoospermia with a history of cryptorchidism (11).…”

“…The cryptorchid testis may have an inherently normal composition that is adversely affected by the local environment and that is dependent on time (11)(12)(13)(14). Furthermore, men with bilateral cryptorchidism who underwent corrective surgery after puberty had a very poor chance of fertility (11)(12)(13)(14). Histologic change also may progress to an irreversible state as tubular atrophy with prominent interstitial cells, tubular wall thickness seen in adult cryptorchid testis, if the dislocated testis remains untreated for long periods of time.…”

“…For example, there is a report of a man with testes of normal volume that were located in the superficial inguinal ring until correction when he was 23 years of age who subsequently fathered four children [43]. Although reported, this is clearly an exception to the norm; nearly all clinicians would suggest that infertility would result among patients with untreated bilateral cryptorchidism.…”
