Early sowing of winter cereals has been promoted as an alternative to catch crops for reducing nitrogen (N) leaching in intensively managed cropping systems.Underlying data for this are, however, scarce and it is unclear how year-to-year variations affect potential reductions in N leaching. Well-tested cropping system models can be used to assess the impact of early sowing on crop yield and N leaching. We tested the ability of the Agricultural Production System Simulator (APSIM) to simulate grain yield, biomass, phenology, N uptake and N leaching from timely and early-sown winter cereals. The evaluation was based on two extensive field experiments carried out in Denmark in continuous winter cereals systems with different N fertilization applications, and a farm experiment in Germany with a grass ley/winter wheat crop sequence and two different N fertilization rates. Additionally, observations from growth stages throughout Denmark were used. After changing a few crop model parameters, APSIM reproduced the general effects of N fertilization and crop sequence on yields and N uptake, as well as N leaching. The model was then used to simulate the effect of sowing time on grain yield over a period of 10 years, to capture year-to-year variability and enable a better evaluation of the efficacy of early sowing for reducing N leaching. In the continuous winter cereal systems, early sowing reduced N leaching at both sites in Denmark. In contrast, in the grass ley/winter wheat system in Germany early sowing increased N leaching, due to enhanced mineralization of grass residues.

Agricultural nitrogen (N) non-point source pollution in the North China Plain is a major factor that affects water quality and human health. The characteristics of N leaching under different N application conditions should be further quantified accurately in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and summer maize (Zea mays L.) rotation farmland in North China, and a basis for reducing the risk and evaluation of N leaching in this area. A three-year field experiment was conducted using an in situ leakage pond method at a typical farmland in Henan in 2017–2020. Crop yield, soil nitrate N residues, and N utilization were also studied during the study period. Five N fertilizer rates were established with 0 (CK), 285 (LN), 465 (MN), 510 (MNO), and 645 (HN) kg N ha−1 for one rotation cycle. MNO was applied with chemical and organic fertilizers. The concentration of nitrate N in the soil leaching solution of CK, LN, MN, MNO, and HN was 0.81-, 1.49-, 3.65-, 5.55-, and 7.57-fold that of the World Health Organization’s standard for underground drinking water. The exponential relationship between the N application rate and leaching was obtained when the annual N input exceeded 300 kg ha−1, and the N leaching rate increased greatly. The leaching rate of nitrate N in the total N was 50.6–82.4% under different treatments of N application. The combination of chemical and organic fertilizers treatment (MNO) reduced the amount of N that was leached in dry years. The nitrate leaching amount of summer maize accounts for 83.0%, 49.4%, and 72.0% of the total nitrate leaching amount of the whole rotation cycles in 2017–2020. LN and MN were recommended as the optimized N application here (285–465 kg N ha−1) with the two-season rotation grain yield of 17.2 ton ha−1 (16.5–17.9 ton ha−1) and nitrate N leaching of 21.6 kg ha−1 (12.6–30.5 kg ha−1).

Nitrogen is a macronutrient that is applied in substantial amounts as a chemical fertiliser to conventional agricultural systems. However, loss of nitrogen from agricultural systems to the environment, in the form of gases (N2O) and leachate (NO3), is detrimental to the environment. As such, improving the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of crops is an essential component of sustainable agriculture. Biostimulants are a category of products that improve NUE when applied to crops and/or soil. Here, we examined the effects of PSI-362, an Ascophyllum nodosum biostimulant mixed with and applied on calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) granules, on grass yield, quality traits, and environmental impacts in lysimeter trials under natural weather conditions. By using PSI-362, it was possible to reduce nitrogen application by 25% without a significant loss in yield compared to a conventional 100% N system. We also observed an increase in NUE under a 75% N with PSI-362 co-application fertilisation regime, and a significant increase in crude protein content compared to the 100% N fertilisation controls. Furthermore, this reduced nitrogen application also resulted in reduced nitrogen loss through leachate (NO3) and N2O to the atmosphere. The total NUE for PSI-362 + fertiliser granules ranged from 58.7% to 78.6% depending on the biostimulant dose, which was significantly better than the fertiliser alone. Our results showed that this biostimulant, which can easily be incorporated into conventional agronomic practices, allows for a more sustainable approach to pasture-based systems.
