“…Activated T lymphocytes express transferrin receptors (Pattanapanyasat and Hoy 1991). Both activated and non-activated T lymphocytes synthesize ferritin but do not secrete (Dorner et al 1980;Pattanapanyasat and Hoy 1991;Pollack et al 1983). Lymphocytes could therefore act as a "mobile" and easily "mobilizable" iron-storage compartment protecting from iron-mediated toxicity, as originally postulated by De Sousa (1978).…”

“…On the other hand, an indirect mechan ism of liver damage can be hypothesized, since free oxygen radicals have been de scribed to interfere in vitro with lympho cyte function and rosette formation [43,44], Altered functions of T lymphocytes might favor a longer viral persistence and/or prime autoimmunity phenomena. In the patients of our study T-cell subsets did not show alterations.…”

“…Monocytes also synthesize ferritin (Summers et al, 1975) which is visualized by cytoplasmic immunostaining (Summers et al, 1974;Nishiya et al, 1980). The minimal surface ferritin immunoreactivity and iron nitrilotriacetate-acid ferrocyanide and/or acid ferrocyanide positivity of monocytes in the present study could be either due to ferritin secretion (Broxmeyer et al, 1982;Pollack et al, 1983; or to the binding of plasma ferritin. Intracellular ferritin appears during the terminal differentiation of monocytes (Andreesen et al, 1984;Worwood et al, 1984), and the brilliant multigranular ferrocyanide staining of bone marrow macrophages is consistent with the known presence of cytoplasmic ferritin/haemosiderin deposits in these cells.…”
