Ferroelectric Smectic C* Phase with Sub-Wavelength Helix Pitch Induced in a Nematic Liquid Crystal by Chiral Non-Mesogenic Dopants

Abstract: We report the development of chiral smectic C* (SmC*) ferroelectric materials with a short helix pitch p o < 150 nm obtained by mixing a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) and chiral non-mesogenic dopants. Chiral dopants are optically active lactates based on terphenyldicarboxylic acid, and the NLC is a binary eutectic mixture of phenyl-and biphenylpyrimidines. The appearance of the SmC* phase in mixtures was confirmed by dielectric, optical and electro-optical measurements. The proposed method for the elaboration o… Show more

“…Investigation of both FLC mixtures parameters: helix pitch p 0 , spontaneous polarization P s and tilt angle θ were carried out according to the described methods [8]. The electro-optical response shape of electro-optical cells based on FLC mixtures was recorded using RIGOL DS 1054 oscilloscope and evaluated by the Origin-2018 software.…”

“…The phenyl and biphenyl pyrimidine derivatives were often used as achiral matrix for creation of FLC mixtures [7][8][9][10][11]. There are described biphenyl pyrimidines with optically active substituents, which have a wide smectic C* phase temperature range, a high spontaneous polarisation (P s ) i.e., 500 nC/cm 2 , and can be used as chiral dopants to achiral matrices [12].…”

“…Terphenyldicarboxylic acid derivatives are promising molecules for possible application as liquid crystals; in particular, a smectic phase has been reported (Pozhidaev et al, 2020(Pozhidaev et al, , 2019Budynina et al, 2022). Another important application of terphenyldicarboxylic acid is as a linking molecule in metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) (Dickie et al, 2006;Schaate et al, 2011;Luo et al, 2017;Bhattacharjee et al, 2015;Chen et al, 2013;Flaig et al, 2017;Zhang et al, 2018;Yuan et al, 2016;Liu et al, 2019;Li et al, 2013).…”

“…The MR molecules can be also used for ferroelectric LC photoalignment [19][20][21]. The photoinduced optical anisotropy of photoalignment layer strongly effects the performance of LC devices [22].…”
