Ferroelectric Behavior of Thiourea

Abstract: The dielectric constant, and the ferroelectric, pyroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of thiourea crystals have been measured in the temperature range 90°K to 300°K. At least three dielectric anomalies are found at 169°K, 177°K, and 202°K, the lowest of these corresponding to a pronounced discontinuity. The crystals are ferroelectric in two regions, below 169°K and between 176°K and 180°K. Substitution of deuterium for hydrogen causes the anomalies to move upwards in temperature by 16°, 16°, and 11°, resp… Show more

“…This was in agreement with thermal diffusivity measurements along these axes reported earlier (Gaffar et al, 1987). Ferroelectric crystals, which exhibit incommensurate phase transitions include ammonium fluroberrylate (Iizumi & Gesi, 1977), potassium selenate , sodium nitrite (Yamada et al, 1963), thiourea (Goldsmith & White, 1959) etc. Thiourea, with the chemical formula SC (NH 2 ) 2 , undergoes successive phase transitions at 169 K (T 1 ), 176 K (T 2 ), 180 K (T 3 ) and 202 K (T 4 ).…”

“…Между 180 и 176 K формируется по-лярная фаза (фаза III) со значением спонтанной по-ляризации P s ≈ 2.5 · 10 −9 C/cm 2 . Между 176 и 169 K находится неполярная несоразмерная фаза (фаза II) и ниже 169 K -полярная фаза (фаза I) со спонтанной по-ляризацией вдоль оси a, равной P s ≈ 3 · 10 −6 C/cm 2 [16]. Внедрение тиомочевины в поры проводилось из на-сыщенного водного раствора.…”

“…Organic crystals belonging to orthorhombic symmetry exhibit interesting ferroelectric, piezoelectric and triboluminescence properties [1][2][3]. The possible correlation between these properties of organic single crystals belonging to orthorhombic system has already been investigated and is found to be structure sensitive [4].…”
