Ferroelectric BaTiO3 single crystal under superstrong electric fields up to 55 MV/m: A comparative experimental and theoretical study

Abstract: We investigated the effect of huge electric field up to E=55 MV/m on tetragonal ferroelectric phase of BaTiO3 single crystal. Both lattice parameters and the dielectric susceptibility along the polar axis were determined. The induced polarization shows a continuous increase up to 20% of the spontaneous polarization. The longitudinal d33 and transverse d31 piezoelectric coefficients were also determined. The experimental data are described by a phenomenological approach. Interestingly, an intermediate critical … Show more

“…We will add two tenth order invariants 2 13 JJ and 23 JJ to the model (15) for qualitative and quantitative description of the recent experimental data 27,33 on BaTiO 3 . We then obtain the following potential: 2 3 1 1 11 1 2 2 111 1 3 3 12 1 2 4 2 2 2 1111 1 112 1 2 22 2 13 1 3 113 1 3 23…”

“…Recently, numerous attempts were made to elucidate the nature of phase transitions in ABO 3 perovskites in severe electric fields up to 10 8 V/m both theoretically and experimentally, via such techniques, as optic microscopy, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), EXAFS spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and EPR . However, only a few communications report the structural parameter variations in single‐phase states under the electric fields far of the excess coercive field. According to XRD and dielectric data in, applying severe electric fields favors a gain in polarization by 20% and a decrease in the piezoelectric coefficients by about 2.5 times.…”
