Ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of Ba modified lead zirconium titanate ceramics

Abstract: Ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of Pb1−xBax(Zr0.532Ti0.468)O3 ceramic compositions for x = 0 to 40 mole% were investigated. As Ba concentration increased, the microstructural studies revealed that grain growth was inhibited and apparent density decreased in PZT ceramics. The room temperature dielectric response (εRT) increased up to 30 mole% with low values of dielectric loss (tan δ). The ferroelectric properties (Pr, Ps and Ec) have shown a decreasing trend as Ba concentration increased from 0 to 4… Show more

“…1(a)-(c), the grains of the BNT-BT-BAT-x/0.04 ceramics become slightly smaller with increasing x (i.e., the amount of BT). It is thought that Ba 2+ concentrates near grain boundaries and suppresses the grain growth in the BNT-BT-BAT-x/0.04 ceramics at a high amount of BT (x ≥ 0.10), which is similar to that of Ba-modified PZT based ceramics [17]. Both the bulk density and relative density of the BNT-BT-BATx/0.04 ceramics was found to increase with increasing x.…”

“…1 This result is consistent with previous reports on barium doping of PZT. 31 The cell parameters obtained from the XRD refinements were used to calculate the tetragonal (δ T ) and rhombohedral (δ R ) spontaneous lattice distortion for each composition and temperature according to the following equations:…”

“…The average grain size is about 2 to 3 µm. It was reported in literature that for PZT and La +3 doped PZT (PLZT) based ceramics, the substitution of Ba +2 for Pb +2 generally leads to a great inhibition of grain growth [13,14]. Similar to Ba-modified leadbased ceramics, for the (1 − x)NBT-xBT ceramics, grain growth is inhibited after the introduction of BaTiO 3 into Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 structure.…”
