The appearance of ferrocene in the middle of the 20th century has revolutionized organometallic chemistry and is now providing applications in areas as varied and sometimes initially unexpected as optical and redox devices, battery and other materials, sensing, catalysis, including asymmetric and enantioselective catalysis, and medicine. The author presents here a general, although personal, view of ferrocene's chemistry, properties, functions, and applications through a literature survey involving both historical and up‐to‐date trends and including examples of his group's research in a number of these areas. The review gathers together general features of ferrocene chemistry and representative examples of the salient aspects. Its focus is on ferrocene's basic properties, ferrocene‐containing ligands, the ferrocene/ferricinium redox couple, ferrocene mixed‐valence and average‐valence systems, the ferricinium/ferrocene redox shuttle in catalysis, ligand‐exchange reactions, ferrocene‐containing polymers, ferrocene‐containing structures for cathodic battery and other materials, ferrocenes in supramolecular ensembles, liquid crystals, and nonlinear optical materials, ferrocene‐containing stars and their electrostatic effects, ferrocene‐containing dendrons, dendrimers, and nanoparticles (NPs) and their application in redox sensing and catalysis, and ferrocenes in nanomedicine.

“…For instance, a sandwich complex, also known as metallocene, in which two π ‐bonded hydrocarbons or their derivative ligands lie on either side of a metal cation, is an attractive strategy for the introduction of metals into macromolecular frameworks. Since the first report on a sandwich complex‐containing macromolecule, polyferrocene, by Arimoto and Haven in 1955, interest in this class of polymers has continued to grow and the numerous published reviews on sandwich complex‐containing macromolecules attest to the importance of this class of organometallic macromolecules . Sandwich complexes feature unique properties as the physical and electronic properties of a hydrocarbon ligand or its derivative are integrated into the physical, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of a metal. Incorporation of these complexes into macromolecules results in intriguing physical, electrical, and optical properties that were hitherto unknown in organic-based macromolecules. These properties are tunable through well-designed synthetic strategies. This review surveys many of the synthetic approaches that have resulted in tuning the properties of sandwich complex-containing macromolecules. While the past two decades have seen an ever-growing number of research publications in this field, gaps remain to be filled. Thus, we expect this review to stimulate research interest towards bridging these gaps, which include the insolubility of some of these macromolecules as well as expanding the scope of the sandwich complexes.
