Ferrocenated nanocatalysts derived from the decomposition of ferrocenium in basic solution and their aerobic activities for the rapid decolorization of methylene blue and the facile oxidation of phenylboronic acid

Abstract: A strategic preparation of ferrocenated compounds as aerobic catalysts was successfully carried out for the decolorization of methylene blue and oxidation of phenylboronic acid without light irradiation and excess addition of hydrogen peroxide.

“…3 show a distinct peak at 1330 and 1384 cm −1 which indicates the presence of -C-N bonds of aromatic amines attributed to adsorption of MB on SCH. Also, the increase in peak intensity at 1597 cm −1 after adsorption indicates an increase in the number of -C = C bonds due to cyclic alkene probably due to adsorption of MB [49,50].…”

“…However, this process not only increases energy requirements due to the reduction potential of water (thermodynamic potential of −0.41 V vs standard hydrogen electrode at pH 7) and subsequent current leakage, [ 24 ] but also changes the solution chemistry through basification, which can severely impact separation performance due to the fouling of PVFc + active sites by nucleophilic hydroxide anions [ 21,25 ] or even chemical degradation of the ferrocene moieties. [ 26 ] Carbonaceous electrodes are widely employed in CDI processes for salt electrosorption, where typical operating potential windows can reach as high as 1 to 1.4 V, but significant improvements in salt adsorption capacity have been observed when Faradaic species are used over purely capacitive materials. [ 9b,24,27 ] To maintain the modularity of the electrochemical cell, the cathode can be functionalized with a Faradaic species to act as an electron sink, yielding an asymmetric electrochemical system.…”

“…The other absorption occurring at 1238 cm −1 , 1729 cm −1 , 1735 cm −1 , and 3302 cm −1 corresponds to C-N stretching vibrations, C=O of amide, C-H stretching vibrations, CH 3 bending, and O-H of alcohol, respectively (Inyinbor et al 2016). On raphia fibers after sorption of methylene blue, one could observe compounds exhibited the dominant peak corresponding to the C-C stretching of methylene blue at 1600 cm −1 (Kumpan et al 2017).…”
