Ferrimagnetic order in the mixed garnet (Y1−xGdx)3Fe5O12

Abstract: Ferrimagnetic order in the mixed rare-earth iron garnet {Y 1-x Gd x } 3 Fe 5 O 12 system has been reinvestigated to cover the temperature range 5.0 to 700 K. The magnetization versus temperature exhibits a systematic variation with changing concentration x. The ferric-ion exchange coupling is strong enough to determine the Curie temperature ≈ 559 K for all the values x. The compensation temperature at which the magnetization crosses zero (shows the minimum) demonstrates the applicability of the three-sublattic… Show more

“…GdIG has the same iron garnet crystal structure, with a third magnetic sublattice (3 dodecahedrally coordinated Gd 3+ ions per formula unit), which is ferromagnetically coupled to the FeA sublattice. The strong variation of the magnetization of the Gd sublattice with temperature makes GdIG a compensated ferrimagnet, with the magnetization dominated by the Gd and FeA sublattices below room temperature 43,45,69 . We hypothesize that the perfect epitaxy of the crystal structure at the YIG/GdIG interface ( Fig.…”

“…For all the inductance measurements, the strength of the applied magnetic field was no more than H 0 ∼ 3 A/m, estimated from the current flowing in the toroid windings. This is much smaller than the ferrite's saturation field (H 0 ∼ 10 5 A/m) [17], which ensures that we always measure the initial susceptibility of the material.…”

“…In previous work we investigated the ferromagnetic order in the mixed garnet (Y 1-x Gd x ) 3 Fe 5 O 12 system [17]. An enlargement of coercive force H c in the hysteresis loop for the low-field M-H curve is clearly observed in near T comp [17].…”

“…An enlargement of coercive force H c in the hysteresis loop for the low-field M-H curve is clearly observed in near T comp [17]. The coercive force H c is defined as that value of magnetizing field that causes the magnetization of the specimen to be zero.…”
