The largest genus of seed‐free vascular plants Selaginella alone constitutes t he family Selaginellaceae, the largest of the lycophyte families. The genus is estimated to contain ca. 800 species distributed on all continents except Antarctica, with the highest species diversity in tropical and subtropical regions. The monophyly of Selaginella has rarely been doubted, in contrast its infrageneric classification has been contentious. In the present study, based on chloroplast and nuclear DNA evidence, macromorphology, spore features, and/or distribution information, Selaginella is classified into six subgenera: S. subg. Selaginella, S. subg. Boreoselaginella, S. subg. Pulviniella, S. subg. Ericetorum, S. subg. Heterostachys, and S. subg. Stachygynandrum. The latter three subgenera are further classified into six, five, and seven sections, respectively. All of these infrageneric divisions, identified with molecular data, are supported by non‐molecular features. A key to infrageneric taxa is given. Thirty‐seven infrageneric taxa published in earlier literature are lectotypified and classified into those infrageneric taxa here recognized. A nomenclatural account of each infrageneric taxon is given.

Fungos, criptógamas e outros palinomorfos holocênicos (7908±30 anos AP-atual) da Planície Costeira sul-catarinense, Brasil 1 RESUMO (Fungos, criptógamas e outros palinomorfos holocênicos (7908±30 anos AP-atual) da Planície Costeira sul-catarinense, Brasil). Neste estudo são apresentados os resultados palinológicos qualitativos equivalentes às análises paleoambientais realizadas em duas seções turfáceas na Planície Costeira sul do estado de Santa Catarina, nos municípios de Santa Rosa do Sul e São João do Sul. Uma amostra da base do testemunho de Santa Rosa do Sul foi datada ( 14 C) em 7908±33 anos AP, referente ao Holoceno inferior. A análise palinológica permitiu identifi cações taxonômicas, com descrições e ilustrações de 54 palinomorfos, relativos a fungos (21), algas (5), acritarcas (1), incertae sedis (1), briófi tos (2), pteridófi tos (15), pólen de gimnospermas (2), e outros palinomorfos (1 cápsula de briófi tos, 4 fragmentos de invertebrados e 2 palinoforaminíferos indeterminados), cujos registros modernos expressam diferentes hábitos de vida. O trabalho tem como objetivos contribuir para o conhecimento dos vestígios da vegetação e táxons relacionados depositados na Planície Costeira sul-catarinense durante o Holoceno. As análises palinológicas conseguintes auxiliarão na interpretação dos paleoambientes e paleoclimas relacionados neste setor da costa brasileira. Palynological analysis of the material allowed for taxonomic identifi cations, and resulted in descriptions and illustrations of 54 palynomorphs related to fungi (21), algae (5), acritarchs (1), incertae sedis (1), bryophytes (2), ferns (15), gymnosperm pollen (2) and other palynomorphs (1 bryophyte capsule, 4 invertebrate fragments, and 2 indeterminate palynoforaminifers), which express diff erent ecological patterns. Th is work aimed to contribute to the knowledge of the plant and fungal fossils remains, and related taxa, recorded from the Coastal Plain of Santa Catarina for the Holocene. Additional palynological analyses will contribute to paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental interpretations of this portion of the Brazilian coast. Palavras-chave:

Weeds are a major deterrent to agricultural and forest productivity and adversely effect urban, natural plant communities, and human and livestock health. Usually, the most troublesome weeds in an area originated somewhere else in the world. Weeds possess traits that give them biological, ecological, and reproductive advantages over non‐weedy plants. Of the 8000 or so weeds in the world, about 200 species are responsible for about 95% of the weed problems of food, feed, fiber, and livestock production. These and additional species cost billions of U.S. dollars in forestry and urban areas and threaten species diversity in natural communities worldwide. About 73% of the world's weeds are dicots (broadleaf weeds) and 25% are monocots (grasses, sedges, rushes, and other monocot groups), whereas the remaining 2% are peridiophytes (ferns and fern allies) and gymonsperms (conifers and conifer allies). An overview is provided for weeds, including a general definition, economic losses, spread, identification sources, population shifts, thresholds, competitive index, effects on tillage production systems, and major species of the world in agriculture, forestry, urban areas, and natural communities.
