Fermilab SRF cryomodule operational experience

Abstract: Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is constructing an Advanced Accelerator Research and Development facility at New Muon Lab. The cryogenic infrastructure in support of the initial phase of the facility consists of two Tevatron style standalone refrigerators, cryogenic distribution system as well as an ambient temperature pumping system to achieve 2 K operations with supporting purification systems. During this phase of the project a single Type III plus 1.3 GHz cryomodule was installed, cooled and tested. … Show more

“…Four major components of the cryomodule test stand reside within the CMTS cave and are shown in figure 4: the Feedcap, the LCLS-II Cryomodule, the Endcap, and the Girder. The Feedcap and Endcap designs shown in figure 5 are similar to the design of the Feedcap and Endcap used at Fermilab Accelerator and Technology (FAST) facility at Fermilab [3,4]. The FAST Feedcap and Endcap designs are in turn are based on the Cryomodule Test Bench at DESY [5].…”

“…Instead, the 2K return is routed directly to a warm vacuum pump after passing through a J-T heat exchanger. Fermilab previously acquired and refurbished two large vacuum pump skids from Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility [6,7] for use in testing SRF cavities at 2.0 K. Fermilab has acquired and is currently refurbishing two more identical vacuum pumps skids, one for use at CMTF and one for Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The primary components of the skid are a Kinney® roots blower (Model KMBD 10,000) and a Kinney® liquid ring pump (Model KLRC 2100).…”
