Fermi LAT search for dark matter in gamma-ray lines and the inclusive photon spectrum

Abstract: Dark matter particle annihilation or decay can produce monochromatic gamma-ray lines and contribute to the diffuse gamma-ray background. Flux upper limits are presented for gamma-ray spectral lines from 7 to 200 GeV and for the diffuse gamma-ray background from 4.8 GeV to 264GeV obtained from two years of Fermi Large Area Telescope data integrated over most of the sky. We give cross section upper limits and decay lifetime lower limits for dark matter models that produce gamma-ray lines or contribute to the dif… Show more

“…Compared to the constraints from 2 years of Fermi -LAT observations of the GC region [66], in the overlapping energy range, our limits are one-two order(s) of magnitude weaker. Also shown is the σ ann v estimate for the γZ explanation of the line-like feature at 130 GeV; the MAGIC upper limit is a factor ∼30 away from this value.…”

“…If the DM particle is a gravitino in R-parity breaking vacua, with τ χ ∼ 10 27 s or larger, it can decay into a photon and a neutralino, producing one monochromatic gamma-ray line at E γ ≃ m χ /2. Searches for features of such origin have been conducted by the Fermi -LAT, in 2 years of observations of the GC region [66], setting lower limits on τ χ of few×10 29 s up to m χ ∼ 600 GeV, whereas, as explained in section 6.2.1, H.E.S.S. observations on the GC Halo are not sensitive for decaying DM searches.…”

“…On the contrary, in a paper published immediately after those two, the Fermi-LAT collaboration published an analysis, largely overlapping the same data sample, that excluded at 95% C.L. the presence of any γ-ray line, in the interval 4 ≤ E γ ≤ 200 GeV from a region of 20 × 20 deg 2 around the Galactic Center [16]. The upper limit (UL) to the cross section with 95% CL is shown in Fig.…”
