This research was carried out to reveal the experiences of pre-service elementary teachers during their visit to the science center and their observations and opinions about this experience. For this purpose, a case study, which is one of the qualitative research designs, was adopted. Thirty-two pre-service elementary teachers participated in the research. Interviews, observations and diaries were used to obtain the data, and the data were subjected to content analysis. As a result of the analysis, four themes were reached: image, interest, contribution, and improvement. The results show that pre-service teachers associate the science center image they create with technology, laboratory and scientists. It was determined that pre-service teachers showed more interest in some disciplines of science, scientists, and technology-related fields in the science center. In addition, it was concluded that the science center will contribute to the innovative and productive vision, economy, science literacy of the society in the city where it is located, science teaching, and the professional development of teachers. Finally, the pre-service teachers made suggestions to increase the contribution of science centers to the region and society. It is thought that the results will be guiding in terms of providing science teaching experience and a qualified science teaching vision to pre-service elementary teachers in informal environments.

“Science Teaching and Science Teachers” from Students’ Point of View

The current study investigated the opinions of secondary school students taking the science course from different science teachers about the science course and science teachers. The current study was conducted with the participation of 32 students instructed by different science teachers and attending different secondary schools in the fall term of 2018-2019 academic year. The data of the current study were collected by means of semi-structured interviews. In the analysis of the data, the descriptive analysis technique was used. The findings of the current study have revealed that high majority of the students love their science classes and science teachers, that in science classes, lecturing, question-answer and note-taking are methods widely employed, that if there is a smart board in the class, then Okulistik or EBA computer program is on, that the assignments given are from the textbook, that the most frequently adopted behavior by the teachers in the face of any discipline problem is warning and that informal learning environments are not used much. Moreover, it was found that projects are rarely assigned to students and the projects assigned are given as homework. A great majority of the students expect their teachers to be entertaining, they want their lessons to be instructed through games and experiments, and they do not want to write a lot in their classes.

Eğitim programlarında gerçekleştirilen reform hareketleri öğrencilerin aktif olduğu, deneyimleyerek öğrendiği stratejileri benimsemektedir. Öğrencilerin aktif olmasına imkân sağlayan alanların başında okul dışı öğrenme ortamları gelmektedir. Öğretmenler, eğitim sürecinde öğretimi planlayan ve uygulayan, lider rolüne sahip olan paydaşlardır. Öğretmenlerin okul dışı öğrenme ortamlarına yönelik deneyimlerinin raporlanması, ihtiyaçlarının belirlenmesi ve görüşlerinin paylaşılması gereklidir. Bu çalışmada farklı coğrafi bölgelerde görev yapan fen bilimleri öğretmenlerinin okul dışı öğrenme ortamları ve bu ortamlarda yürütülen öğretim faaliyetlerine ilişkin görüşlerini ve ihtiyaçlarını açığa çıkarmak amaçlanmıştır. Fenomenoloji desenine göre tasarlanan bu çalışmada, araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan bir görüşme formu kullanılarak gönüllü dokuz fen bilimleri öğretmeni ile bir çevrimiçi platformda ses kaydı alınarak görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Toplanan veriler içerik analizi ile incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın bulguları; fen bilimleri öğretmenlerinin okul dışı öğrenme ortamları hakkında yeterli bilgiye sahip olduklarını, avantajlarını vurguladıklarını, bütün öğrenme alanlarında etkili bir biçimde kullanılabileceğini ifade ettiklerini ancak bu ortamlardan sıklıkla yararlanmadıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Öğretmenler, okul dışı öğrenme ortamlarını çoğunlukla gezi ve eğlence amaçlı kullanmakta, genellikle bürokratik işlemlere yönelik hazırlık yapmakta ve süreci çoğunlukla planlamamaktadırlar. Öğretmenler bu ortamlarda gerçekleştirilen öğretimden sonra soru-cevap tekniğini kullanarak öğrencilerin deneyimlerini değerlendirmektedirler. Öğretmenler okul dışı öğrenme ortamlarında çeşitli sorunlarla karşılaşmakta ve buralarda öğretim gerçekleştirmek için bazı açılardan kendilerini yetersiz hissetmektedirler. Öğretmenler, bu ortamlardan etkili bir biçimde yararlanmayı sağlayacak zengin içerikli kaliteli eğitimlere ihtiyaç duymaktadırlar. Öğretmenler teknolojinin okul dışı öğrenme ortamlarında kullanılmasını önermektedirler. Araştırma bulgularından elde edilen sonuçlar alanyazınla ilişkilendirilerek tartışılmış ve çeşitli öneriler gündeme getirilmiştir.
