The next generation of multipetawatt laser facilities may enable new opportunities in radiation-pressure driven ion-acceleration. Owing to the motion of the thin solid foil used as a target in such experiments, the laser light reflected from the surface will be Doppler downshifted. We show that the downshifted light can be correlated with the ion energies and may be used as a diagnostic of the acceleration mechanism. The possibility of using the back-scattered light in ion acceleration experiments to produce long-wavelength few-cycle pulses is also explored. The highest ion velocities are obtained in the light-sail regime, the theory of which is here extended to regimes with varying reflectivity due to a time-dependent intensity. The reflected pulse with a large Doppler redshift and approximately linear chirp may subsequently be compressed using a grating compressor to obtain a near single cycle pulse with long wavelength and relatively high intensity. Analytic estimates are supported by 1D3P relativistic particle-in-cell simulations.

Experimental measurements of spatially resolved ultrafast dynamics of the critical surface in ultra-intense laser–solid interactions are essential for a proper understanding of the physical mechanism of the interaction. Resolving ultrafast motion at both the relevant length scales (micrometers) and timescales (femtoseconds) simultaneously has been a challenging task. Here, we demonstrate a novel technique for mapping the spatiotemporal dynamics of hot and solid dense plasma created by high contrast (picosecond contrast ∼10−9) femtosecond relativistic intensity laser pulses. This pump–probe Doppler spectrometry technique offers hundreds of femtosecond temporal resolution, together with a few micrometer spatial resolution across the transverse profile of the plasma. We present the evolution of the plasma surface critical for the probe pulse at the target front as well as the rear. Early time measurements ([Formula: see text] 5 ps) using this technique provide very important information about shock wave generation and propagation and the state of the target rear.

We demonstrate a flexible multichannel fiber-based imaging Doppler spectrometer to characterize plasmas in high intensity (≥1 × 1018 W/cm2) laser-plasma experiments at high repetition rates. This instrument collects data from ×21 different plasma locations combining optical fibers and a single imaging spectrometer. This diagnostic maps the plasma velocity evolution as a function of time with sub-pico-second resolution. Experimental results showing 2D velocity measurements of plasma with 20 μm spatial resolution are presented. Intensities of the order of 1018 W/cm2 were used to generate a plasma, while a much less intense, frequency doubled (400 nm), probe beam (1011 W/cm2) was used to measure the Doppler shift from the plasma critical surface. The instrument can be scaled to a larger number of channels (e.g., 100) still using a single spectrometer.
