Femtosecond mode-locked Tm^3+ and Tm^3+-Ho^3+ doped 2 μm glass lasers

Abstract: We report on the spectroscopic characterization, continuous-wave and continuous wave mode-locked laser performance of bulk Tm(3+):GPNG fluorogermanate and Tm(3+)-Ho(3+):TZN tellurite glass lasers around 2 μm. A slope efficiency of up to 50% and 190 mW of output power were achieved from the Tm(3+):GPNG laser at 1944 nm during continuous wave operation. The Tm(3+)-Ho(3+):TZN laser produced a 26% slope efficiency with a maximum output power of 74 mW at 2012 nm. The Tm(3+):GPNG produced near-transform-limited puls… Show more

“…It is interesting to note that the ascending order of the parameters is X 6 < X 2 < X 4 for the presented glasses and the trend can be observed in other rare earth doped FP glasses 31 which also contain high concentrations of Al(PO 3 ) 3 . As we all know, the Judd-Ofelt parameters are closely related to the local structure and bonding in the vicinity of rare-earth ions.…”

“…Recently, lasing and mode-locked operation from bulk thulium-doped tellurite glasses were reported [20,[26][27][28]. Since Tm 3+ -doped tellurite glasses offer a great potential for the development of 2-µm laser sources in bulk as well as fiber configurations, there is interest in further exploring the spectroscopic properties of the tellurite glass hosts doped with thulium.…”

“…On 90 one hand semi-conductor lasers are compact, efficient direct optical energy generators, on the other hand they represent good pump sources for lasers. We discuss the two main semiconductor lasers operating in the mid-IR: quantum cascade lasers, that have been used to generate broadband few picosecond duration laser pulses, and lead-salt diode lasers, whose integration in thin-disk 95 architecture has enabled room temperature pulsed operation.…”

“…It is still early to summarize all the capabilities of Ho-doped materials -partially plagued by a strong quasi-three level behavior [93] -but a number of exciting results have already been reported [94]. A 1997 nm 410 femtosecond near-transform-limited 84 mW passively mode-locked laser was reported [95]. Fonnum et al demonstrated a 0.5 J, cryogenically cooled, nanosecond Q-switched Ho:YLF laser system operating at 1 Hz repetition rate [96].…”
