Femtosecond laser excitation dynamics of the semiconductor-metal phase transition in VO2

Abstract: We have measured the subpicosecond optical response of a solid-state, semiconductor-to-metal phase transition excited by femtosecond laser pulses. We have determined the dynamic response of the complex refractive index of polycrystalline VO 2 thin-films by making pump-probe optical transmission and reflection measurements at 780 nm. The phase transition was found to be largely prompt with the optical properties very close to the high-temperature metallic state being attained within about 5 ps. The equilibratio… Show more

“…128,129 Optical switching applications of VO 2 NCs are possible as the insulator-conductor transition can be triggered by irradiation with laser pulses. The use of short laser pulses for controlling the phase transition of VO 2 has been the subject of intensive studies, especially for what concerns the bulk, 130 but much less on the side of NCs. It is nowadays quite established that the conductive phase of VO 2 can be switched on optically in less than 100 fs.…”

“…limit the use of a set of physica-chemical techniques available for the adequate investigation of the temperature-and light-induced phase transformations. The prospective methods to investigate the I-M PT in VO 2 are ultrafast optical techniques due to high efficiency of ultrafast light pumping influence, probing sensitivity, and possibility to investigate the time evolution of I-M transformation process [2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…9,10 The kinetics of the phase transition in VO 2 films has been studied in detail for different time scales. [10][11][12][13][14] The absorption length in VO 2 for visible light excitation is ϳ100 nm ͑Ref. 13͒ and is comparable with the size of the opaline pores occupied by VO 2 ͑hereafter VO 2 elements͒ forming PhCs with a PSB in the visible region.…”

“…In the present experiments, we do not study the recovery process, which is known to take a much longer time due to thermal effects. 10,11 The pump beam density on the sample surface was W = 10-25 mJ/ cm 2 . The spot sizes of the focused pump and probe beams on the sample surface were 100 and 20 m, respectively.…”
