This article explores the potential of feminist new materialisms and theories of affect for reframing how we might think about beauty and the body. Through an exploration of girls, beauty and the school ball (prom), the article engages with Karen Barad’s concept of intra-action to conceptualise beauty as an affective-material process. This perspective involves an ontological shift in how girls, bodies and beauty are understood; from thinking about beauty and the human as discursively produced, towards a relational approach that conceptualises materiality and affect as co-constitutive forces. The article is interested in how such a framing might invite ways of understanding beauty that avoid binary frameworks, such as good/bad, subject/object and discourse/matter. I consider the potential this might offer feminist analyses of beauty, where the focus is less on what beauty is or what it means, and more on how it comes to be.

Envisioning Tourism and Proximity after the Anthropocene

The current Earthly crisis demands new imaginings, conceptualisations and practices of tourism. This paper develops a post-anthropocentric approach to envisioning the possibilities of the ‘proximate’ in tourism settings. The existing generic definitions of proximity tourism refer to a form of tourism that emphasises local destinations, short distances and lower-carbon modes of transport, as well as the mundane exceptionality of the ordinary. We conceptualise proximity tourism with feminist new materialist literature, which accords agency to the ongoing common worlding of all matter—including but not limited to humans—rather than to separate individual agents. More specifically, our research explores the idea of proximity by drawing closer to the geo—to the Earth—through geological walks in the Pyhä National Park in Finnish Lapland. We analyse these walks with the notions of rhythmicity, vitality and care—ideas constructed from the theoretical heritage guiding our study. By doing this, we explore the potential of proximity tourism in ways that intertwine non-living and living matter, science stories, history, local communities and tourism. The outcome of this analysis, we propose, composes one possible narrative of tourism after the Anthropocene.

Das Buch soll zwei Jahrzehnte der Gleichstellungsarbeit abbilden. Entwicklungen wurden dafür skizziert und Gleichstellungsakteurinnen und -akteure um ihre Einschätzung gefragt. Zu Wort gekommen sind Genderforschende sowie Praktikerinnen und Praktiker auf dem Gebiet der Gleichstellungsarbeit in Wissenschaft, Forschung und Innovation. Die so entstandenen Beiträge sind größtenteils Beispiele institutioneller Forschung (u. a. Analysen zur Unterstützung der Entscheidungsfindung und Planung an der Hochschule oder Forschungseinrichtung). Sie fußen auf Erfahrung, Wissen und Kompetenzen sowie auf dem Austausch zwischen Forschenden, Praktikerinnen und Praktikern. Das Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung rückt mit dem vorliegenden Band die Fortschritte der vergangenen zwei Dekaden in den Fokus, um zu reflektieren. Ziel war es, den Wissensbestand zu sichern und für die Politikgestaltung nutzbar zu machen.
