In empirical and theoretical criminology references to racism and ethnicity are commonplace, although much discussion has centred on the narrowly defined 'race and crime' debate. In an attempt to move beyond this debate, which is focused on whether certain ethnic minorities are over-represented in the prison population because of elevated rates of offending or because of discriminatory treatment in the criminal justice system, this paper proposes the formulation of minority perspectives in criminology.These would be concerned with empirical, theoretical, practical and policy issues and address matters of representation, knowledge production, the historical contextualisation of minority experiences in theory development, and the ethical duties of criminologists working within a minority perspective.

Neste artigo, são analisadas as perspectivas feministas na criminologia, em particular, os discursos sobre criminalidade feminina e construção do género. Parte-se de uma visão ampla sobre feminismos e construção de conhecimento e apresenta-se uma revisão histórica da emergência e da consolidação das perspectivas feministas na criminologia. Discute-se em particular o argumento feminista de que a construção social do género pauta os percursos de vida das mulheres que transgridem, e se reflecte na resposta formal e informal a essas transgressões. São analisadas as principais críticas tecidas pelas autoras feministas ao que designam de 'discursos tradicionais' sobre mulher e crime e as propostas que apresentam de reconstrução desses discursos. Palavras-chave:Criminalidade feminina, Género, Perspectivas feministas. FEMINISMO(S) E CONSTRUÇÃO DE CONHECIMENTOA emergência de estudos científicos que conceptualizam a variável género e lhe conferem um papel de destaque, quer na criminologia quer noutras áreas de conhecimento, é indissociável do movimento feminista. Após uma primeira vaga, cujo início é geralmente situado na segunda década do século XX, o feminismo ressurge nos anos sessenta associado a movimentos sociopolíticos de libertação (Messerschmidt, 1995) 2 . É nesse contexto que jovens mulheres se indignam ao perceber que os seus companheiros de 'luta libertária' as vêm apenas como assessoras, quer de trabalho quer de prazer sexual. Essa indignação, associada às ideias de Simone de Beauvoir, que analisa no seu livro Le Deuxième Sexe (1952) . A criação do texto original enquadra-se no desenvolvimento de uma tese de doutoramento (com apoio da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia -SFRH/BD/8664/2002). Para prestar homenagem à Doutora Carla Machado não poderia deixar de seleccionar um texto construído em estreita colaboração entre nós, naquela que foi a sua primeira orientação de doutoramento. Although there is an already large British literature both supporting and attacking left realism, and a growing North American interest on the subject among criminologists, there has been surprisingly little written which attempts to locate both the strengths and weaknesses of the left realist position on crime control. Perhaps the place where the left realists may be weakest is in response to a feminist critique. Actually, it is not only left realism but the socialist left in general which has been unsuccessful in providing adequate responses to the issues brought forth by feminists. This paper attempts to locate the position of left realism within the left criminology debate, and to find its strong and weak points. Further, it attempts to explicate the feminist critique, and to suggest responses critical criminologists might explore, such as those proposed by peacemaking criminology.Critical criminology has been enlivened in recent years by a broad series of attacks and proposals from a British school of thought variously termed left realism, radical realism, new realism and critical realism. The major proponents of this point of view are connected with Middlesex Polytechnic, although some argument can be made that a broad series of articles appearing in the American journal Crime and Social Justice (now Social Justice) in the past decade has shared at least some common ground.A central premise of left realism is that radical criminologists (whom they term "left idealists") have ignored victimization within the working class in favor of studying the crimes of the elite and occasionally romanticizing the working class criminal. Left realists call for a recognition that street crime is "real," and not a moral panic created by elite opinion makers such as the media. The lack of progressive socialist alternatives, they argue, has allowed right wing politicians to use the "law and order" issue to obtain ideological support for a social order detrimental to the disenfranchised and the construction of a socialist society. 1In this paper, we will attempt to find strengths and weaknesses in the arguments of left realists and their opponents. One of the most telling weaknesses, however, is the difficulty realists have incorporating the critiques of feminist criminologists, particularly around the issues of the victimization of women.
