The following three independently confirmed social facts are all that are available: a low VAW index compared with other EU countries (although it is worth stressing that, while lower, it is not significantly lower); a low gender equality index (as measured by socioeconomic factors); and a highly conservative society (compared with Western countries)—religiosity, adherence to Catholic tradition, as evidenced by the fact that the percentage of its population that participates in religious ceremonies is the highest in Europe (Pew Research poll, 2018), popular right-wing and conservative political parties, restricted reproductive rights for women (Mishtal, 2015) and the promotion of traditional “family values” in political discourse (Grzyb, 2014). Male VAW was relegated to the sidelines of mainstream sociological analyses and surveys in the twentieth century.…”
