Female sexual dysfunction in essential hypertension: a common problem being uncovered

Abstract: FSD is more prevalent in women with essential hypertension compared with women with normal blood pressure, and its prevalence declines with adequate blood pressure control. Adequate control of hypertension with medication not affecting sexual function can have a great impact on the quality of life of hypertensive patients. Physicians should recognize and properly manage FSD in hypertensive women.

“…Erectile function scores were significantly lower with older antihypertensive agents (diuretics and beta-blockers) than with modern antihypertensive agents (calcium antagonists, ACE-inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers). Of note, similar results were observed in females in another observational cross-sectional study of 417 women [49].…”

“…Analysis of variance revealed only a significant main effect of time (F (7,21) = 22.16; P < 0.0001). No significant main effects of group (F (1,21) = 0.59) or interaction between group and time (F (7,21) = 0.35) were detected. Post hoc analysis for the main effect of time shows an FSH peak from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, independent of group.…”

“…Analysis of variance revealed a significant interaction between group and time (F (7,20) = 5.90; P < 0.0001) and a main effect of time (F (7,20) = 24.80; P < 0.0001), but no significant main effects for group (F (1,20) = 0.80). Post hoc analysis for the interaction between group and time revealed a significant reduction in LH plasma levels at 4:00 pm in 2K1C rats when compared with sham rats.…”

“…12 Apart from the above-mentioned confounding factors, the drugs used for infertility treatment, like gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist agents, clomiphene citrate, and oral contraceptive pills, result in decreased libido and dyspareunia secondary to vaginal dryness, leading to sexual dysfunction. 13 Medical conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, 14 and hypertension 15 are also associated with FSD. Male partners of an infertile couple may develop sexual dysfunction following the diagnosis of FSD.…”
