Female sex pheromone of a nettle caterpillar, Monema flavescens, in China

Abstract: Monema flavescens Walker (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae) is a multivoltine, generalist moth whose larvae cause serious damage to many types of trees. Pheromone lures prepared according to a study of a Japanese population were found to be ineffective at attracting M. flavescens nettle caterpillars in China, and some studies have shown intraspecific geographical differences in the composition of sex pheromones. We therefore reexamined the sex pheromone composition of M. flavescens in a Chinese population. In this stu… Show more

“…Monema flavescens develops through four life stages: egg, larva (6-8 instars), pupa and adult (Dyar, 1909;Collins, 1933). Females use sex pheromone to attract males for mating (Shibasaki et al, 2013;Yang et al, 2016). Mated females lay between 500 and 1,000 eggs underside of the leaves (Collins, 1933;Clausen, 1978).…”

“…divisella , insecticidal control is not effective because the larvae feed inside the iris shoots or leaves and so cannot readily be reached by sprays if the timing of egg hatch is missed. Unlike other sampling methods that can be very time consuming and require technical expertise for pest identification, traps baited with specific pheromones are useful and are frequently used for monitoring of various pest populations (e.g., Charles et al., ; Yang et al., ; Bergh et al., ).…”
