“…Participants in qualitative research in Mozambique 29 , Rwanda 30 , South Africa 26 , or Uganda 31 noted that men may feel discouraged to use a female condom as it impedes foreplay with their partner's elongated labia. A research group from the University of Padova in Italy, The Padova Working Group in Female Genital Mutilation, described LME as a 'form of masturbation socially accepted… a pretext for encouraging sexual promiscuity' 32 , and then considered that LME had an influential role on women's higher vulnerability to HIV 25 .…”

“…They were recruited in five schools of Wakiso District in the surroundings of Kampala, the capital of Uganda, and were asked to draw their experiences with LME (Grassivaro Grassivaro Gallo, Villa, and Pagani 2006). Two years later, the PWG repeated the same study in Mangochi District, Malawi (Grassivaro Gallo, Moro, and Manganoni 2009). The PWG researchers had already employed the same approach 20 years earlier in Somalia during a study on the excisional types of FGM (Grassivaro Gallo and Moro Boscolo 1984).…”

“…Girls associate LME with solitude, ostracism and fear. It can thus be considered, as it has been demonstrated in previous studies, that by involving male participants and using graphical representations as a research tool, new perspectives and information regarding how young people experience, understand and perceive LME can be acquired (Grassivaro Gallo, Moro, and Manganoni 2009;Grassivaro Gallo, Villa, and Pagani 2006;Martínez Pérez and Namulondo 2011;Moore, Madise, and Awusabo-Asare 2012).…”

“…Qualitative research has been conducted in Democratic Republic of Congo (Grassivaro Gallo, Mbuyi & Bertoletti, 2010), Lesotho (Khau, 2012), Malawi (Grassivaro Gallo, Moro & Manganoni, 2009;Pétursdóttir, 2010), Mozambique (Bagnol & Mariano, 2008, Rwanda (Koster & Price, 2008;Fusaschi, 2010Fusaschi, , 2012, and Uganda (Grassivaro Gallo & Villa, 2006;Martínez Pérez & Namulondo, 2011). The risks and benefits for the health of women who practice LME are, however, still under-explored.…”
