Primary pulmonary neoplasms in cattle are rare. There are few studies on the pathological findings of these neoplasms in this species. This study aimed to describe the histological and immunohistochemical findings of primary and metastatic pulmonary carcinomas in cattle. We conducted a retrospective study of 19 cases of epithelial neoplasms with pulmonary involvement. Histologically, most of the neoplasms were classified as primary pulmonary neoplasms, including different adenocarcinoma subtypes (4/19, 21%) and adenosquamous carcinomas (3/19, 16%), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (6/19, 32%), metastatic uterine adenocarcinoma (4/19, 21%), metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (1/19, 5%), and metastatic cholangiocarcinoma (1/19, 5%). By immunohistochemistry, all neoplasms were positive for pancytokeratin, and 4/19 (21%) were positive for vimentin. Primary pulmonary neoplasms had immunoreactivity for thyroid transcription factor-1 (6/7), while only 2 of these cases were positive for napsin A. All cases with squamous differentiation (9/9) had immunoreactivity for cytokeratin (CK) 5/6, while only 7 of these cases were positive for p40. CK20, CK7, and CK8/18 showed varied immunoreactivity in the primary and metastatic pulmonary carcinomas but were important markers to confirm the diagnosis of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma and metastatic cholangiocarcinoma. HepPar-1 was only positive in the metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma. The limited number of cases of metastatic uterine adenocarcinomas in this study precluded identification of a specific immunophenotype for this tumor. Immunohistochemistry proved to be an important tool to confirm the proper classification of these neoplasms.

A long-haired, male, neutered domestic cat was referred to a veterinary clinic for the first time at 13 years of age due to anorexia, vomiting, dehydration, and depression. Blood biochemistry revealed renal azotemia. The cat was only given food for animals with kidney failure, and no treatment was given. Three weeks before its death at 16 years of age, the clinical signs returned, becoming more frequent and intense. The cat was referred to the veterinary clinic again, and also severe hypertension and mild dyspnea as the unique respiratory signs were detected. Blood biochemistry again revealed renal azotemia. At necropsy, the lungs exhibited a nodule in the right caudal lobe with a 3-cm-long axis and another nodule in the left caudal lobe with a 2-cm long axis, which histologically corresponded to a lepidic-predominant adenocarcinoma. The bronchioalveolar origin of the neoplasms was corroborated by immunohistochemistry with specific biomarkers, namely Thyroid Transcription Factor-1 (TTF-1), Napsin A, Surfactant Protein B (SP-B), Pancytokeratin and Vimentin, with the neoplastic tissue testing positive for all biomarkers. Both kidneys presented macroscopic and microscopic lesions consistent with nephritis and severe fibrosis, which was deemed to be the cause of death. Primary lung neoplasms in cats are rare and difficult to detect clinically due to clinic signs that may be nonspecific.

A 10-year-old, male-neutered, domestic short-hair cat was examined at the Veterinary Health Center Emergency Service at Kansas State University for a one-day history of dyspnea. Prior to thoracocentesis, sedation was provided. The cat stopped breathing after sedation and went into cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was unsuccessful. At necropsy, there was severe pleural effusion and bilateral pulmonary atelectasis. The myocardium of the atria and ventricles, and tunica adventitia of coronary vessels, pulmonary artery, and aorta, had pale, firm, multinodular masses ranging from 0.3 to 0.5 cm in diameter. Multiple nodules were also present in the liver. Multifocally expanding the epicardial fat and compressing the underlying epicardium, infiltrating, and expanding the myocardium, and expanding the walls of major vessels, there was a multinodular, unencapsulated, densely cellular neoplasm composed of polygonal epithelial cells arranged in nests and packets and supported by a fine fibrovascular stroma. The nodules in the liver had similar histologic features. In this case, neoplastic cells at the primary and metastatic sites were intensely immunoreactive to synaptophysin, variably reactive to chromogranin A, and negative for neuron specific enolase, cytokeratin, vimentin, thyroglobulin, and smooth muscle actin. The gross, histologic, and immunohistochemical findings support the diagnosis of chemodectoma, with metastases to the liver. Synaptophysin and chromogranin A were the most useful immunohistochemical markers to diagnose malignant chemodectoma in this cat.
