Feline intestinal adenocarcinoma: anesthetic protocol

Abstract

Intestinal adenocarcinoma is an invasive malignant neoplasm that originates from glandular tissue, with metastatic potential. The best treatment is surgical correction, and the anesthetic protocol chosen is directly related to the successfulness of the procedure. This study aims to report the anesthetic approach in a feline with intestinal adenocarcinoma submitted to intestinal resection and anastomosis. An 11-year-old mixed breed feline was examined and diagnosed with intestinal neoplasia. The feline was referred to the procedure of resection and intestinal anastomosis. The procedure was performed in the PIVA mode and lasted 90 minutes. The patient remained hospitalized receiving post-surgery medications for three days and was discharged on the fifth day. In addition to the drug treatment, the feline received food via an esophageal tube until being discharged from the hospital. A histopathological sample was analyzed, confirming adenocarcinoma. The anesthetic protocol, surgical treatment and postoperative care were adequate, resulting in an effective procedure.
