Comparative research has rapidly grown to become one of the most viable perspectives and methodologies in contemporary criminology, particularly in studies with primary data collected through ethnographic fieldwork. This study examines major issues (e.g., access, informed consent, conceptual and cultural equivalence) confronted by comparative scholars conducting fieldwork in China. Data used in this study involve the authors' own research experience in collecting primary data regarding law and the legal system in several cities in China through methods such as courtroom observations, interviews, and surveys. Systematic documentary analysis serves as a main analytical strategy to enhance interpretive validity.

This entry reviews the life of Fei Xiaotong and introduces two of his most important academic contributions. Fei was a Chinese scholar who was highly regarded by Western academics for his analysis of the economy and society in rural China. He was also a statesman who used his knowledge to promote development in China's village areas. Among his academic contributions, two of the most influential ones are the concept of the “differential mode of association,” describing Chinese social structure, and his Tanner lecture “Plurality and Unity in the Configuration of the Chinese People,” which focused on nationality and ethnic groups on the path to creating a unified China.

Fei Hsiaotung was China's pre‐eminent sociologist and anthropologist. As a world‐renowned researcher, he was noted for his studies of rural China, the Chinese peasant economy, and China's ethnic groups, and was often labeled as the “plaintiff for the Chinese peasants.” His works on these subjects were instrumental in laying a solid foundation for the development of sociological and anthropological studies in China.
