Feeding Value of High-oil Corn for Taiwan Country Chicken

Abstract: The feeding value of high-oil corn fed to Taiwan Country (TC) chicken was examined by measuring apparent metabolizable energy (AME), growth performance, sexual maturity, carcass characteristics, and plasma pigmentation. In a completely randomized design, 870 sex-intermingled one-wk-old chicks were assigned to one of 30 floor pens, 29 birds per pen, and each pen randomly assigned to one of five dietary treatments. The experiment was ended when birds were 16 wk of age. The five dietary treatments varied in main … Show more

“…Tube feeding was a frequently used assay to determine the TME value of feedstuffs, although its use is no longer widespread today (Sibbald, 1976 ; Sibbald and Wolynetz, 1987 ; Sell et al, 2001 ; Wang et al, 2017a ). In such assays, many researchers report the AME or AME n values by subtracting EEL from TME (Lin et al, 2003 ; Tshovhote et al, 2003 ; Pirgozliev et al, 2006 ; Latshaw and Freeland, 2008 ; Zhao et al, 2008 ; Farran et al, 2010 ; Jie et al, 2013 ; Jahanian and Rasouli, 2014 ). This calculation does not take into the account that tube feeding assay applies a longer period of excreta collection (36 to 72 h) for a limited FI.…”

“…In Taiwan, more than 50% of the chicken markets are dominated by TCC (Taiwan Provincial Government, 1998), which is an upgraded local breed. The phenotype of TCC was a single comb, red to black feather, and black shank native breed, which is superior in meat quality, disease resistance, heat tolerance, poor fertility and other characteristics to the commercial broilers (Lee, 1998;Chao and Lee, 2001;Lin et al, 2003). To reduce broodiness, all TCC breeders are housed in individual cages and artificial insemination (AI) has been widely used for commercial production.…”
