Feeding practices of mothers during childhood diarrhoea in a rural area of Nigeria

Abstract: Our main objective was the identification of different types of foods given or withheld for various kinds of childhood diarrhoea. The study was conducted in rural Yoruba communities of Osun State, Nigeria. Questionnaires and focus group discussions were used and a total of 33 5 randomly selected mothers with children under 5 years o f age were interviewed. The diets chosen by the mothers reflect cultural perceptions of the aetiology of illness and of the therapeutic properties of local foodstuffs. Raw corn sta… Show more

“…Caregivers did display awareness that fluid replacement is the key measure to control adverse consequences of diarrhea (i.e., dehydration). The tendency to withhold food or introduce new items is common in Africa 28. Unfortunately, zinc, proven to be effective in diarrhea management,29 has not yet been widely promoted in The Gambia.…”

“…The mothers' perception observed in this study is consistent with the findings of studies carried out in different rural communities which reported a reflection of the aetiology of illness and of the therapeutic properties of local foodstuffs in the diet fed to infants by their mothers during common childhood illnesses. Rice, sugar, sweet foods and groundnut preparations perceived as causes of diarrhoea were withdrawn [18,19]. The implications of the restriction of these energy-rich staple foods on the nutritional outcome of the child cannot be overemphasized especially during convalescence.…”

“…Another study carried out in Egypt found a higher incidence of recurrent diarrhoeal diseases and a significant longer duration of diarrhoea in infants fed with food only on mothers' request than in infants fed with food regardless of the mothers' request [17]. Also, in a study carried out in a rural area of Nigeria, it was observed that majority of the mothers would reduce fluid intake for most common types of diarrhoea [18]. This study, therefore, described the belief and knowledge of nursing mothers with respect to food restriction during acute diarrhoea.…”

“…A study conducted in Indonesia also reported that mothers with higher educational status were less likely to have their children have diarrhoea in the past one month prior to the study (Rohmawati, 2010). A study carried out in the South-Western Nigeria, found out that for the most common types of diarrhoea, most mothers would reduce the intake of fluid or stop breast-feeding (Jinaddu et al, 1994). In this study, however, many care-givers did not reduce or stop breastfeeding during episodes though there was a reduction in the intake of other foods.…”
