Feeding habits of the round stingray Urobatis Halleri (Cooper, 1863) (Chondrichthyes: Urolophidae) from the continental shelf of Jalisco and Colima, Mexico

Abstract: A total of 295 stomach contents of round stingray Urobatis halleri (Urolophus halleri), from the continental shelf of Jalisco and Colima (Mexico), were analyzed. The samples were taken seasonally from September 1997 to August 1998. The index of relative importance was used to determine the prey importance. This species feeds mainly on benthic invertebrates, such as the stomatopods Eurysquilla veleronis and Meiosquilla swetti, amphipods, other crustaceans, the shrimp Processa peruviana and brachyuran portunids,… Show more

“…Similarly, Babel (1967) reported that bivalves, polychaetes, and crustaceans composed over 94 % of the total food content, by volume, for U. halleri; however, bivalves were the most important single food class. In contrast, Valadez-González et al (2001) reported U. halleri fed primarily on stomatopods, crustaceans, and to a lesser extent on polychaetes and fishes. The samples sizes for the stomach content data of U. jamaicensis are small and caution should be taken in their interpretation.…”

“…Dietary studies on different species of the Urotrygonidae also showed dominance of crustaceans. In Mexico, stomatopods were the most important dietary category for Urotrygon asterias (Jordan & Gilbert 1883) and Urobatis halleri (Cooper 1863) although amphipods and crabs were also important in the diet of the latter species (Valadez‐González, 2001; Valadez‐González et al , 2001). In Brazil, Almeida et al (2000) and Lobato & da Silva (2003) found that the diet of Urotrygon microphthalmum Delsman 1941 is based on polychaetes and crustaceans.…”

“…Studies of the feeding ecology of batoids are not common in Mexican Pacific waters (including the GC), and existing reports have focused on diet description (Valadez‐González et al, , , ; Valadez‐González, ; Downton‐Hoffmann, ; A. B. Guzmán‐Castellanos, unpubl.…”
