In the present study, we carried out experiments on the diet of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium equidens. We tested which type of food and which density of food is suitable for larval development. For the experiment on the type of food, eight treatments were carried out: (I) starvation, (AL) microalgae, (RO) rotifers, (AN) Artemia, (RO + AN) rotifers + Artemia, (AL + RO) microalgae + rotifers, (AL + AN) microalgae + Artemia, (AL + RO + AN) microalgae + rotifers + Artemia. For the experiment on the density of food, we used the type of food, which had resulted in a high survival rate in the previous experiment. Three treatments were carried out: 4, 8 and 16 Artemia nauplii /mL. The rate of feeding during larval development was observed. The survival, weight and percentage of juveniles of each feeding experiment were determined. We found that larvae are carnivores; however, they have requirements with respect to the type of food, because larvae completed their cycle from the zoeal to the juvenile stage only when Artemia nauplii were available. We also verified that the larvae feed mainly during the day-time, and are opportunistic with respect to the density of food offered.

ABSTRACT. FEEDING BEHAVIOR OF THE PRAWN, MA CROBRACHIUM ROSENBERGII (DE MAN) (CRUSTACEA, PALAEMONIDAE), DURING THE LARVAL PHA SE: QUALlTATlVE ANALYSIS. Feeding behavior 01' the larvae's prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii De Man, 1879, in each stage ofdevelopment was studied face at Arlemia Linnaeus, 1758 nauplii, dry and wet diets. Groups of ten larvae in each stage were placed in 500 mI beakers at 29°C in filtered brackish water. AfieI' the fasting period ofacclimatization, the three types 01' food were offered separately to the larvae and the feeding behavior was observed during 30 min o Feeding perception, capture, grasp and ingestion offood were used to detetmine feeding pattern. Stage Ilarvae do not eal. The feeding behavior of larvae was similar on the stages TI -Xl. The perception in distance does not occur in most individuaIs; the feeding process generally started with the physical contact of food with the animal. Food is captured by thoracic appendages (maxillipeds until stage IIl, and maxillipeds + percopods in stagcs IV -XI) and particles are grasped and handled by maxillipeds. ln opposition at the capture, the ingestion is a seletive processo Selective responses decrease in later stages and larvae become omnivorous in greater degree. Larvae of the African River Prawn Macrobracltium vollenlzovenii, indigenous to West Africa, were reared at various salinities (0-32°/00). A salinity range of 16-24°/00 was found most suitable with highest survival and growth, and lowest number and duration of instars. Freshwater was lethal already to zoea I -larvae. A mass culture experiment demonstrated the aquaculture potential of this Macrobrachium species. Larval rearing to postlarvae was possible applying the same methods as for M. rosenbergii.
