Feeding behavior in primiparous lactating sows: Impact of a high-fiber diet during pregnancy1

Abstract: Voluntary feed intake of hyperprolific sows can be insufficient to cover the requirements for milk production and maintenance of body condition. A bulky diet fed during pregnancy is known to prepare sows for an ad libitum feed supply after parturition as shown by the increased feed intake during lactation. The aim of this study was to investigate the feeding behavior of young sows during their first lactation to evaluate the further impact of the feeding experience acquired during pregnancy, through the additi… Show more

“…An improved milk yield might have been made possible through the greater feed intake measured in HF sows. Although the feed intake was not significantly greater in these sows during the whole lactation, it was significantly greater during the 1st week of lactation (Guillemet et al, 2006a and2006b). Further investigations are needed to test these hypotheses.…”

“…In trial 1, the farrowing pen was equipped with a computerised system connected to a load cell located under the trough in order to record the individual feeding behaviour of sows during lactation (Guillemet et al, 2006a); in trial 2, the sows were equipped with a carotid catheter for the measurement of metabolic and endocrine parameters around parturition and during lactation (unpublished data). Both trials were conducted following the same experimental design and housing conditions.…”

Just like weaning pigs, reproductive sows have to cope with changes in their physical and social environment and modifications in their diet throughout their breeding cycle.…”

“…The discrepancy between this study and previous ones may be due to protocol differences, such as their use of relatively old sows when other studies used gilts. Providing a high-fibre diet during gestation may also be beneficial for lactating sows because it prepared the sows for an ad libitum food supply after farrowing and increased food consumption, especially in primiparous young sows and during the first week of lactation (Guillemet et al, 2006). However, when subjected to two-way choice tests, gestating sows preferred standard gestation and lactation diets to a high-fibre diet, consistent with its lower palatability (Guillemet et al, 2007 and.…”

“…Considering that pre-farrowing body composition is thought to be an important factor for both sow longevity (Tholen et al, 1996b) and piglet mortality (Grandinson et al, 2005), and sow condition before mating can have a significant effect on condition before parturition (Guillemet et al, 2006), it is important that these associations are explored.…”
