Feedback loops between 3D vegetation structure and ecological functions of animals

Abstract: Ecosystems function in a series of feedback loops that can change or maintain vegetation structure. Vegetation structure acts as an important control on ecological niche space available to animals, influencing many aspects of behavior and reproduction. In turn, animals perform ecological functions that shape vegetation structure. However, most studies concerning 3D vegetation structure consider only one of these relationships. Here, we review these separate lines of research and integrate them into a single co… Show more

“…Early successional communities are often characterized by thriving at high light to nutrient ratios, whereas the opposite is true for late successional species. Such light-dependent dynamics have farreaching consequences, as the composition and hence functional characteristics of vegetation determine to some extent the functional and species composition of higher trophic levels (Russo et al, 2023).…”

“…Finally, there has been recent interest in quantifying the 3D niche of ecosystems and how this influences wildlife behavior, habitat use, population dynamics, and community diversity (e.g. see several recent reviews on the topic, Gámez and Harris 2022, Russo et al 2022).…”
