Feedback from Usability Evaluation to User Interface Design: Are Usability Reports Any Good?

Abstract: This paper reports from an exploratory study of means for providing feedback from a usability evaluation to the user interface designers. In this study, we conducted a usability evaluation of a mobile system that is used by craftsmen to register use of time and materials. The results of this evaluation were presented to the designers in different forms. First, the designers were presented with a traditional usability report. Second, we facilitated a dialogue where the results of the evaluation were discussed. … Show more

“…The MF mechanism provides feedback to respondents about their action before proceeding. Such feedback is consistent with usability design principles (e.g., Nielsen, 2005; Shneiderman, 1998; see also Kaczmirek, 2009, p. 44). While Hays and colleagues (2010) argue that the AF approach decreases burden, it may increase cognitive effort.…”

“…Previous studies have included developer input. Hoegh et al [2006] (which also includes previous work by Nielsen et al [2005]) interviewed developers to obtain feedback on observation of user tests and usability evaluation reports. Hornbaek and Frøkjaer [2005] interviewed developers regarding the utility of redesign proposals.…”

“…Hignett et al's focus on usability engineering in medical device development is another substantial contribution to the field [Hignett et al, 2018]. The exploration of IEC 62366 integration by Nielsen et al and the review of usability evaluation methodologies and IEC 62366 compliance by Smith et al underline ongoing efforts to align usability practices with regulatory standards [Nielsen et al, 2019;Smith et al, 2020].…”
