Feedback and motor skill acquisition using a haptic dental simulator

Abstract: Aim To investigate the effect of qualitatively different types of pedagogical feedback (FB) on the training, transfer and retention of basic manual dexterity dental skills using a virtual reality (VR) haptic dental simulator. Methods Sixty‐three participants (M = 22.7 years; SD = 3.4 years), with no previous dental training, were randomly allocated to one of three groups (n = 21 each). Group 1 received device‐only feedback during the training phase, that is the visual display of the simulator (DFB); Group 2 re… Show more

“…For this study, we used the manual dexterity exercises developed by ACTA (Academic Center for Dentistry, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; www.acta.nl) used previously to examine motor skill. 31 The simulator outputs stereo information via two digital multimedia projectors, which operate simultaneously, resulting in the projection of two images superimposed onto the screen through a polarising filter. The screen size is 5″ with a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a resolution of 800 9 600.…”

“…While it is recognised that expert performance is faster than novice performance [10,11], the converse is not necessarily true, i.e. faster performance does not necessarily confer better quality surgery [54,55]. The same applies to simulator-generated metrics; for example, while experts tend to have smoother movements, having smoother movements does not necessarily mean the operator is an expert.…”

“…After providing sufficient evidence confirming the soundness of the dental trainer, further research should focus on the added educational value derived from the use of the VRE compared to and in addition to contemporary teaching methods, in terms of quality and cost amongst others. A first study on the added value of feedback from the dental trainer (combined with instructional feedback) was published . A major advantage of VRE in education innovation is being connected to a database that collects all information on performance and student behaviours during their learning process.…”
