Features of systemic lupus erythematosus and sarcoidosis occurring together

Abstract: Chronic diffuse pulmonary fibrosis has previously been reported as a feature of systemic lupus erythematosus (1-5). However, the histologic finding of granulomas in the lungs of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus has been rarely reported (6). We report a patient with clinical and laboratory features of systemic lupus erythematosus who, on the basis of noncaseating granulomas found at lung biopsy, was diagnosed as having sarcoidosis.Case report. EB, a 62-year-old white woman, was well until age 25 years… Show more

“…Cases in which du ring the course of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) BHL and lung infiltration attributable to sarcoidosis appeared have been reported by Harrison et al (1979), Hunter et al (1980) and Needleman et al (1982). These occurred in women aged 54, 62 and 47 after the diagnosis of SLE had been established for 16 months, eight years and four months; in a11 cases the diagnosis of sarcoidosis was supported by histology, of a skin papule and liver, of lung and hilar Iymph-nodes, and of lung and bonemarrow respectively.…”
