Features Based Spatial and Temporal Blotch Detection for Archive Video Restoration

Abstract: In order to restore blotched archive video without causing distortion to areas of the frames that are not corrupted, the locations of the blotches must be identified. Blotch detection usually needs reliable motion estimation to avoid false detection of uncorrupted regions in existing techniques. In this paper a blotch artifacts detection technique, which is based on spatiotemporal blotch image features extraction to avoid the dependence on the motion estimation, is proposed. In order to greatly reduce false al… Show more

“…Also using motion compensation, the ROD detector [14] compares the current pixel with its temporal neighbors to detect spatio-temporal anomalies. Other methods, such as [29], require several steps to detect blotches. After identifying candidates based on their spatial features, false positives are eliminated by searching for temporal discontinuities.…”

“…Other methods required several steps to detect blotches. For instance in [23], the first step consisted in finding potential blotch candidates based on their spatial features. Among these candidates, the real blotches were detected by their temporal intensity discontinuities.…”

“…2 Complexity very difficult problem since moving objects also cause temporary discontinuities. According to the studies, due to the fact of high cost of the blotch restoration, it is seen that more manual procedures are needed when compared with the correction of other artefacts [13]. In the studies, it was aimed to restore the blotches in archive films without decreasing the frame quality, disrupting the originality of the frame, and by minimizing human intervention.…”

“…e performance of these studies varies depending on the characteristics of blotches and the efficient handling of the complexity of archive film content. e main feature observed in most of the previous approaches was the comparison of the low temporal correlation blotches with the real objects having high correlation on the frames [13].…”
