“…The National Flood Interoperability Experiment (NFIE) conducted at the NWC sought to answer research to operability questions related to development of continental‐scale, real‐time hydrologic simulations using a framework for open water data services in space and time and evaluate how this effort lead to improved emergency response and community resilience. Maidment () provides a conceptual framework for NFIE and the research carried out as part of this experiment is archived in two featured collections of this journal — see Nelson (, ) for introductions to these collections. The August 2018 issue of JAWRA provides another installment of the research activities generated at the NWC Summer Institute.…”

Looking Back at 2018

“…The February issue of JAWRA contained the National Flood Interoperability Experiment II (NFIE II) FC. The seven papers of the NFIE II collection ranged from issues and methods for comparing the output from the national scale model with other models and data, development of data‐driven approaches and missing data for assimilation, flood forecasting, flood mapping, and damage assessment (Nelson ). The April issue included a FC focused on the Connectivity of Streams and Wetlands to Downstream Waters.…”
