Feature-Based Solid Model Reconstruction

Abstract: In this paper, we propose an effective solution to reconstruct solid models of existing objects. Specifically, we convert the model reconstruction problem into the issue of feature parameter extraction, and thereby design diverse methods to extract the parameters of basic design features from input surface meshes. After extracting the feature parameters, the corresponding features are constructed. By performing modeling operations on those features, the final solid model is constructed, and meanwhile the compl… Show more

“…The RE framework generally adopted and commonly referred to in the literature [31][32][33] is based on the following six main phases: data capture, pre-processing, segmentation, feature classification, surfaces fitting and CAD model reconstruction. Several methodologies are available for each one of these phases and an in-depth analysis of these techniques is discussed in [19].…”

“…Reverse engineering is mainly used when technical documentation (such as technical drawings) is missing, especially in the case of old parts, when the technical documentation was not digitized or in the case of unique hand made parts, etc. The literature, [8][9][10][11][12] as well as industrial practice, offers many applying methods of reverse engineering. According to Buonamici et al, in, [13] after analyzing the literature, he deduced that most reverse engineering applications follow the same common steps (Figure 1).…”

“…to extract the size parameters by the grid data [13][14][15]. Wang proposed the extraction of the characteristic parameters of bending, scanning, rotation, extrusion and setting out from the mesh grid, then completed the reconstruction of the entity model through the forward modeling, so as to ensure that the part model be editable [16]. However, since there is uncertain situations in transforming point clouds into the grid data, this method also leads to confusion of feature extraction, so that the models obtained by automatic processing are often inferior in accuracy, and manual intervention is required for correction.…”
