Feasibility study of peer-led and school-based social network Intervention (STASH) to promote adolescent sexual health

Abstract: Background Effective sex education is the key to good sexual health. Peer-led approaches can augment teacher-delivered sex education, but many fail to capitalise on mechanisms of social influence. We assessed the feasibility of a novel intervention (STASH) in which students (aged 14–16) nominated as influential by their peers were recruited and trained as Peer Supporters (PS). Over a 5–10-week period, they spread positive sexual health messages to friends in their year group, both in-person and… Show more

“…We assessed the risk of bias of each study using different tools, as explained in the Methods section. Two of the included papers [ 17 , 18 ] had a quasi-experimental design and were assessed by the ROBINS-I scale, finding a moderate risk of bias. The ROB-2 scale was used to assess two RCT studies [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“…The text was created by a group of university students targeting peers with emphasis placed on contraception methods and feminism [12]. Another ongoing student-peer education intervention implemented in six schools in Scotland targeting adolescents 14 to 16 years old includes the Sexually Transmitted infections And Sexual Health (STASH) program [13,14]. This intervention utilized trained peers to, "spread positive sexual health messages," via in-person conversations with peers as well as on social media websites such as Facebook [13,14].…”
